1300-luvun ristiretkeläinen (Nicolas Cage) palaa toverinsa (Ron Perlman) kanssa kotimaahansa, joka on sillä välin joutunut mustan ruton kouriin. Kirkko syyttää noituutta ruton aiheuttajaksi ja määrää ristiretkeläiset kuljettamaan noidaksi syytetyn tytön (Claire Foy) syrjäiseen luostariin, jossa munkkien on määrä suorittaa vitsauksen poistava rituaali.
